Healthy Habits Towards Gut Health

1. Switch to a Healthier Diet

Staying healthy isn’t always about how often you eat. Sometimes, you also have to be keen on what you’re eating. MDAnderson.org suggests a combination of clean and unprocessed foods if you want to keep your gut as healthy as possible. Limiting sugar intake can also be of great help since eating beyond the recommended daily sugar intake can often lead to the overgrowth of bad bacteria. So is eating processed foods and drinking unhealthy amounts of alcohol.

According to Lori Chang, associate director of MD Anderson Clinical Nutrition, maintaining gut health is all about balance. “Eating the rainbow” is the most suggested type of diet as it allows you to focus more on rich sources of fiber, essential nutrients, and prebiotics.

Here are some of the best prebiotic-rich foods suggested by pcrm.org:

  • Artichokes
  • Chicory root
  • Raw dandelion greens
  • Leeks
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Asparagus
  • Whole wheat
  • Spinach
  • Beans
  • Bananas
  • Oats
  • Soybeans

2. Observe Proper Meal Timing

Eating your meals at the right time is just as important as choosing the right foods to eat. It’s important to avoid overwhelming your GI tract by eating frequent meals in smaller portions. It’s also best to ease the digestive process by making sure that you chew your food thoroughly before swallowing it.

With proper meal timing, you can avoid overeating and keep your sugar levels stable.

3. Manage Stress Levels

In her current journal on Behavioral Medicine Research, Janice K Kiecolt-Glaser states that stress and depression are closely linked to unhealthy gut bacteria. These mental health concerns reshape the gut bacteria’s composition through stress hormones, inflammation, and autonomic alterations which can later on release metabolites, toxins, and neurohormones that can alter eating behavior and affect your mood.

Take some time to destress or try some supplements that may help you get stress relief to keep your gut bacteria stable.

4. Consider Probiotic Foods and Supplements

Aside from a plant-based diet, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine also recommends probiotics from healthy food sources such as miso, sauerkraut, tempeh, water kefir, kimchi, and other fermented foods. Probiotic supplements and digestive enzymes may also help you maintain a healthy gut with limited access to food sources.
