How do you know what vitamins to take?

Maintaining the appropriate supplements and keeping track of the different vitamins and minerals your body needs can get overwhelming. This is especially true, considering that there are 30 vitamins, minerals, and dietary components that our bodies require.

The good news is there are several easy ways to find out your levels and what needs more attention or supplementation.

Supplements & Vitamins: What’s the General Rule?

There’s a basic rule when it comes to getting enough vitamins and minerals — that is to make an effort to get enough from food in your diet first, then supplements second. Supplements are designed to ‘supplement’ and not to substitute for nutrition from food itself.

We have to supplement smart by consulting with our health providers and pharmacists, while using tool like hormone and vitamin testing for finding out what exactly we’re deficient in.

Supplements for Micronutrient Deficiency

Vitamins and minerals are what’s known as micronutrients because you only need a small amount of these nutrients for your body to function. However, missing the minimum amounts needed may result in disease.

According to the CDC, different groups are vulnerable to a variety of nutrient deficiencies. For Example, vitamin D deficiency may be linked to race or ethnicity, while pregnant women need more folic acid, or how young adult women are generally in need of more iodine. The CDC also noted that deficiencies in vitamin B6, vitamin D, and iron, are the most common deficiencies.

When it comes to vitamins and hormones, a vitamin deficiency that is linked to both is vitamin D. Some of the most common culprits of vitamin D deficiency include aging, obesity, steroidal medicine, smoking, and more. Hypothyroidism and lack of vitamins seem to increase the risk of graying hair

How & When to Supplement

The “how” can best be done by checking with your doctor or pharmacist what you might need. One way they may confirm their diagnosis is with a test. Nowadays, there are plenty of home testing kits to assess vitamin deficiencies and hormone profiles. This can help disassociate symptoms between the two.

As for “when”, follow what your doctor or pharmacist recommends based on their expert analysis of your test results. Supplement appropriately and don’t take more than what the label says. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
